Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Untitled (Perfect Lovers), 1987-1991
Gonzalez-Torres synchronized two industrial clocks placed side by side, referencing his partner’s battle with AIDS. Inevitably, because batteries fail and things tend toward entropy, the clocks would slowly begin to advance at differing rates, out of sync, having moved, however briefly, perfectly together.
Gonzalez-Torres’s lover, Ross Laycock, died on January 24, 1991 due to AIDS related complications. On January 9,1996 Gonzalez-Torres also died due to AIDS related complications.
